How to Sew a Ladder Stitch (Invisible Stitch)
Share
When sewing dolls or soft toys, there will usually be a small opening left in the fabric so that the piece can be turned right side out and stuffed. Once the doll is fully stuffed, this opening needs to be closed neatly.
The best way to close this gap is with a ladder stitch, also known as an invisible stitch. This hand sewing technique allows you to close the opening so the stitches are almost completely hidden.
The ladder stitch is simple to learn and is an essential skill for anyone making dolls or soft toys.
Step 1: Thread the Needle
Start by threading your needle and tying a small knot at the end of the thread.
This knot will anchor the thread inside the doll so it remains hidden once you begin stitching.
Step 2: Insert the Needle Inside the Opening
Insert the needle close to the beginning of the opening gap and pull the thread through so the knot is caught on the inside of the doll.
This hides the knot inside the fabric and prevents it from being visible on the outside of your project.

Step 3: Make the First Ladder Stitch
Next, insert the needle into the opposite side of the opening, directly across from where your thread came out.
Instead of pulling the needle straight through, slide the needle through the edge of the fabric for about 0.25–0.5 cm before bringing it back up to the surface. Then pull the thread through completely.
This creates a small horizontal stitch hidden inside the seam allowance.

Step 4: Continue Stitching Down the Gap
Repeat the same process on alternating sides of the opening.
Each stitch should run parallel to the edge of the fabric, creating a series of small stitches that resemble the rungs of a ladder — which is where the ladder stitch gets its name.
As you sew, keep the stitches slightly loose. This gives you more room to manoeuvre and helps the seam close evenly later.
Continue slowly along the entire opening.

Step 5: Close the Seam
Once you reach the end of the opening, gently pull the thread tight.
As the thread tightens, the stitches will pull the two fabric edges together and the seam will close almost invisibly.
Finally, tie a small knot in the thread and trim away the excess.

Tips for a Neat Ladder Stitch
- Use small, even stitches
- Keep your thread slightly loose until the end
- Use thread that matches your fabric colour
- Work slowly for better accuracy
With a little practice, the ladder stitch becomes quick and easy to do.
Final Thoughts
The ladder stitch is one of the most useful hand sewing techniques when making dolls and soft toys. It allows you to neatly close stuffing openings without visible stitches, giving your finished project a professional and polished look.
Once you master this technique, you’ll find yourself using it for many sewing projects beyond doll making.
