Right Side vs. Wrong Side of Fabric (Explained Simply)

Right Side vs. Wrong Side of Fabric (Explained Simply)

When you’re sewing, you’ll often see instructions that say:

“Place right sides together.”

But what does that actually mean?

What Is the Right Side of Fabric?

The right side is the side that will be visible on the finished project.

For example:

  • On a doll, it’s the outside of the body and clothing
  • On a cushion, it’s the decorative side
  • On clothing, it’s the side people will see when you wear it

If you’re using printed fabric, the right side is usually:

  • Brighter
  • More vibrant
  • Smoother
  • Slightly shinier

This is the “pretty” side you want facing outward.

What Is the Wrong Side of Fabric?

The wrong side is the inside of the fabric — the side that will not be visible when your project is finished.

On printed fabric, the wrong side often:

  • Looks faded
  • Has lighter colours
  • Shows small printing dots
  • Feels slightly rougher

When sewing a doll, the wrong side will usually be on the inside, hidden within the seams.

What About Solid Fabrics?

With solid-coloured fabrics, it can be harder to tell the difference.

Here are a few ways to check:

  • One side may look slightly smoother
  • One side may feel softer
  • The colour may look just slightly deeper on one side

If you truly can’t tell — don’t worry.
For most doll-making projects, it won’t make a big difference. Just stay consistent and use the same side as the “right” side throughout your project.

Tip: Use the Selvedge

Look at the long finished edge of your fabric (called the selvedge).

Many fabrics have writing printed along this edge.
That writing is printed on the right side of the fabric.

So if you can read the writing clearly, you’re looking at the right side.

Why It Matters When Sewing

Sewing patterns often say:

Place right sides together.

This means you should:

  • Put the two “nice” sides facing each other
  • Sew along the seam
  • Then turn the piece right-side out

When you turn it, the beautiful side will be on the outside, and the seams will be hidden inside.

A Simple Trick for Beginners

Once you’ve identified the right side, place a small piece of tape or a safety pin on the wrong side of each fabric piece before you start sewing.

This helps prevent mistakes — especially when working with multiple pieces for dolls or clothing.
