How to Choose the Best Sewing Scissors for Beginners

Starting any new hobby comes with a wave of excitement — learning new techniques, beginning fresh projects, and choosing new tools. Sewing is no different. The good news? Sewing doesn’t have to be an expensive hobby. As a beginner, there are very few tools you truly need (even though there may be many you want).

I always recommend starting small and investing only in the essentials until you’re sure sewing is the right hobby for you.

However, there is one tool — besides your sewing machine — that can truly determine the success of your first project:

A good, sharp pair of fabric scissors.

Why Good Scissors Matter

Your scissors don’t need to be expensive, but they must be sharp and used exclusively for fabric.

Using your fabric scissors for paper, cardboard, or household tasks will dull the blades quickly and make cutting fabric frustrating and inaccurate. A clean cut makes sewing easier, more precise, and far more enjoyable.

If you visit a fabric or sewing shop, you’ll likely find “tailor’s scissors” that are perfectly suitable. Don’t hesitate to ask for a recommendation — staff usually know which models are reliable and beginner-friendly.

Buying online requires a bit more consideration. If that’s your route, here are three key questions to ask yourself before choosing a pair.

1. How Comfortable Is the Grip?

A quality pair of scissors should last for years. Think about how many projects you’ll sew — and how many hours your hands will spend holding those scissors.

Look for:

  • Ergonomic handles
  • A soft or silicone grip
  • Comfortable finger spacing

Cutting fabric shouldn’t strain your hand. Comfort matters more than appearance.

2. How Long Are the Blades?

Blade length makes a bigger difference than many beginners realize.

Longer blades allow you to cut fabric in smooth, continuous strokes. Short blades require many small snips, which can create uneven edges.

Think of it like taking bites of a sandwich:
You can take lots of tiny bites — or a few satisfying mouthfuls. The same principle applies to cutting fabric.

For most sewing projects, especially garments or dolls, a medium to long blade (around 20–25 cm total length) is ideal.

3. Is There an Adjustable Screw?

A proper pair of tailor’s scissors will have a visible screw connecting the two blades.

This is important because:

  • It allows the scissors to be tightened if they loosen over time
  • It enables blade separation for sharpening
  • It helps adjust the blade tension for smoother cutting

Scissors without an adjustable screw tend to wear out faster and can’t be properly maintained.

What I Don’t Recommend (For Most Beginners)

Electric fabric cutters may look impressive, but for most sewing projects — especially small or detailed ones like dolls or children’s clothing — they are unnecessary.

When cutting pieces for my dolls or dungarees, I need precision and control. Manual scissors provide that accuracy.

Electric cutters can be extremely useful for quilting or cutting large amounts of fabric in straight lines. But for beginner sewing and detailed projects, a high-quality manual pair of fabric scissors is more than enough.

Final Thoughts

If you invest in one tool beyond your sewing machine, make it a reliable pair of fabric scissors. They don’t need to be expensive — just sharp, comfortable, and used only for fabric.

A good cut sets the foundation for a good seam — and a successful sewing project.
